Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Support for Opioid and Alcohol Use Disorders
Medication Assisted Treatment, or MAT, uses medication as part of a complete treatment plan for substance use disorders. Treatment may also include counseling, medical care, and other recovery support based on each patient’s needs.
At TruCare Internal Medicine, we offer several long acting injectable treatment options, including Vivitrol, Sublocade, and Brixadi.
Vivitrol
Vivitrol is used to treat alcohol dependence and help prevent a return to opioid use after detoxification.
-
HOW IT IS GIVEN: Injection into the muscle of the buttock by a healthcare provider
-
HOW OFTEN: Once a month
Vivitrol contains naltrexone, a medication that blocks the effects of opioids. For patients being treated for opioid use disorder, opioids must be fully out of the body before starting treatment.
Vivitrol may be a good option for patients looking for a non opioid medication that is given once a month.
Sublocade
Sublocade is used to treat moderate to severe opioid use disorder.
-
HOW IT IS GIVEN: Injection under the skin by a healthcare provider
-
HOW OFTEN: Once a month
Sublocade contains buprenorphine, a medication that can help reduce opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It slowly releases medication over time to provide steady treatment throughout the month.
Because it is given monthly, patients do not need to take a daily dose of buprenorphine.
Brixadi
Brixadi is a long acting buprenorphine injection used to treat moderate to severe opioid use disorder.
-
HOW IT IS GIVEN: Injection under the skin by a healthcare provider
-
HOW OFTEN: Available as a weekly or monthly injection
Brixadi contains buprenorphine, a medication that can help reduce opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Having both weekly and monthly options gives patients and providers more flexibility when choosing a treatment schedule.
